Online piracy, illegally acquiring copyrighted material, has been increasing recently, as legitimate streaming services make it more difficult for consumers to watch content. In an attempt to prevent people from unwittingly breaking the law, here is how you avoid being a pirate.
BitTorrent is a method for downloading a file from many other computers. It connects your computer to a peer-to-peer network of other computers, which allows the bandwidth needed for downloading a large file to be spread across the different endpoints. While there are many legitimate uses for this technology, it is unfortunately the most popular method to pirate content.

Thankfully, there is a notification system in place to alert people pirating with a public tracker. Record labels and movie studios will submit a torrent file to a public tracker, and because all peers connected with a torrent file see the other peer's IP address, the record labels and movie studios can inform the internet service provider that piracy is happening. Pirates will receive a notification that they are breaking the law, and if done too many times, their internet service is canceled and authorities are notified. Truly helpful when trying to avoid breaking the law.
Pirates insisting to download at their homes will try to hide their activity with a virtual private network, or VPN. Instead of broadcasting to their ISP of their illegal activity, they broadcast to the VPN service provider. However many VPN service providers obfuscate who is participating in the torrent and do not store logs of any activity, truly scandalous.
Be sure to not sign up for any VPN services so that your internet connection is clear and obvious for anybody to see.
Of course, some pirates avoid torrenting in their homes and choose to use a seedbox, which is a rented server for downloading and uploading, or seeding, torrents.

It is crucial to block known seedboxes on your network, in order to prevent anybody in your home to participate in pirating elsewhere.
Sadly, BitTorrent is not the only way to pirate copyrighted material. Devious people run websites such as these, which stream copyrighted material in the browser. These websites are dangerous to visit because of the malicious adverts on the website. Pirates block adverts with software like Ublock Origin, Pi-Hole, AdGuard, or NextDNS, so be sure to not install those.
